INTRODUCTION
In this lesson you’ll learn a very useful phrase meaning “I don’t understand.” It is useful, of course, because many times you won’t immediately pick up on what people are saying.
BODY
In Swahili, “I don’t understand” is
Sielewi.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Si - e - le - wi.
Once more:
Sielewi.
Another thing you can say when you’re confused is “I don’t know,” which in Swahili is
Sijui.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Si - ju - i.
Sijui
Another option is to tell someone, “I don’t speak Swahili.” This phrase in Swahili is
Siongei Swahili.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Si - o - nge - i Swa - hi - li.
Once again:
Siongei Swahili.
The first word, siongei, means “do not speak.”
(slow) Si - o - nge - i
Siongei
This is followed by Swahili, which is “Swahili.”
(slow) Swa - hi - li.
Swahili.
Here’s the whole sentence:
(slow) Si - o - nge - i Swa - hi - li.
Siongei Swahili.
