Eric: Top 25 Swahili Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 1 “What's your name?” in Swahili. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll encounter a common question for Swahili learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “What's your name?” In Swahili this is-
Medina : Jina lako ni nani?
Eric:The first word in the question is
Medina : Jina
Eric: meaning “name” in English.
Medina : (Slow, by syllable) jina
Eric: Listen again and repeat.
Medina : jina
{Pause}
Eric: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Medina : lako
Eric: meaning “your”
Medina : (Slow, by syllable) lako
Eric: Now repeat.
Medina : lako

Eric: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.

Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Peter.”

Eric: You’ll see that it’s almost the same. Simply replace “Lisa” with “Peter.” Now say, “My name is Peter.”

Eric: Let’s try another and replace “Peter” with “Sara.”
Medina : Sara
Eric: “Sara”
Medina : (slow) Sara (regular) Sara
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Sara.”
Medina : Jina langu ni Sara.
Eric: Again, it mostly stays the same. Simply replace the name “Peter” with “Sara.” Now say, “My name is Sara.”

Medina : Jina langu ni Sara.
Eric: For more practice, replace “Sara” with “Viktor.”
Medina : Viktor
Eric: Viktor
Medina : (slow) Viktor (regular) Viktor
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Viktor.”
Medina : Jina langu ni Viktor.
Eric: Again, all you have to do is replace the name. Now try saying “My name is Viktor.”

Eric: Now it's time for a quiz.
Eric: Imagine you're visiting Kenya and someone asks you your name. Your name is Lisa. How will you answer?

Medina : Jina lako ni nani? (five seconds) Jina langu ni Petero.
Eric: Imagine your name is Sara. Answer the speaker's question.
Medina : Jina lako ni nani? (five seconds) Jina langu ni Sara.
Eric: Imagine your name is Viktor. How will you respond?
Medina : Jina lako ni nani? (five seconds) Jina langu ni Viktor.
Eric: Now imagine you want to learn that person's name. Ask the question.
