Dana: Welcome to 3-Minute Swahili Season 1, Lesson 4 - Asking How Someone Is. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask and answer the question “How are you?” in Swahili.
Body
Dana: Here's the formal way to ask “How are you?” in Swahili.
Medina: [Normal] Habari yako?
Dana: First is a word literally meaning “news.”
Medina: [Normal] habari [Slow] habari
Dana: Last is the word meaning “your.”
Medina: [Normal] yako [Slow] yako
Dana: Listen again to the formal question meaning “How are you?”
Medina: [Slow] Habari yako? [Normal] Habari yako?
Dana: Now, imagine you're speaking to more than one person. Here's the way to ask, “How are you (all)?”
Medina: [Normal] Habari zenu?
Dana: First, again, is the word literally meaning “news.”
Medina: [Normal] Habari [Slow] Habari
Dana: Last is the plural word meaning “yours.”
Medina: [Normal] zenu [Slow] zenu
Dana: Listen again to the question meaning “How are you?” when speaking to more than one person.
Medina: [Slow] Habari zenu? [Normal] Habari zenu?
Dana: Here's a response meaning “I'm fine. Thank you.”
Medina: [Normal] Mzuri, asante.
Dana: First is a word meaning “fine.”
Medina: [Normal] mzuri [Slow] mzuri
Dana: Last is the word meaning “thank you.”
Medina: [Normal] asante [Slow] asante
Dana: Listen again to the response, “I'm fine. Thank you.”

Medina: The word habari in Swahili is used as a greeting and to inquire about the condition of someone or something. Remember to always put the thing you are inquiring about after habari. For instance, Habari ya gari lako? means "How is your car?"
