Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Kenya Series at SwahiliPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Kenyan holidays and observances. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 22. Kenya Fashion Week. In Swahili, it’s called wiki ya mitindo.
Kenyans celebrate Kenya Fashion Week by displaying the best styles among current and traditional designs. These designs, or mapambo in Swahili, are created by expert designers who use the opportunity provided by this festival to showcase their creativity.
In this lesson, we will learn about how Kenyans celebrate Kenya Fashion Week.
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question-
This event has had a number of different names in the past. Can you name one?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening.
Every year, this event provides an opportunity, or in Swahili fulsa, for fashion designers across Kenya, as well as a number hailing from foreign countries, to display their latest creations. Buyers and people in the media examine the products and consider their marketability.
Kenya Fashion week brings a wave of new work for local and international designers, as high-profile labels, sponsors, and news outlets closely follow everything that happens during the event. Sponsors often include big brand names and international companies.
A red carpet event is held and an exciting dinner organized. Fashion designers, in Swahili wasanii wa mapambo, use this opportunity to seek out new contacts for buyers or people who could promote their business.
Of course, the ultimate objective of this festival is to turn Kenya into the capital of lifestyle design in Africa. People who wish to gain entry into the fashion business in Kenya get a superb opportunity to check out the competition!
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
This event has had a number of different names in the past. Can you name one?
Kenya Fashion Week has had several different names. First, it was called Trendz Kenya Fashion Festival, or sherehe ya mwelekeo wa mitindo ya Kenya, then it was called Sub Saharan Africa’s Most Beloved Fashion Event, or tukio linalopendwa sana la mitindo katika sehemu ndogo ya Sahara barani Afrika and later it was called Brain Child of Sonu Sharma or mtoto wa akili ya Sonu Sharm. Currently it’s called Kenya Fashion Week.
So listeners, how was this lesson? Did you learn something interesting?
